Why Do You Need a Denture Reline by a Denturist Periodically?

Many denture wearers don't realize that their dentures need periodic relines to maintain a proper fit. A denture reline is the process of adding new material to the fitting surface of a denture so it conforms to the current shape of the gum tissue. Without periodic relines, dentures gradually become loose and uncomfortable.

The reason relines are necessary is that the jawbone and gum tissue change shape over time after teeth are lost. This process, called bone resorption, is ongoing and gradual. As the bone shrinks, the denture that once fit snugly begins to have gaps between the fitting surface and the gum tissue.

Loose dentures cause a cascade of problems. They move when you eat and speak, which is uncomfortable and embarrassing. They can cause sore spots and irritation on the gum tissue. They may require more denture adhesive to stay in place. And they can accelerate bone loss by distributing chewing forces unevenly.

We recommend denture relines every two to three years for most patients. Some patients may need relines more frequently, particularly in the first few years after getting dentures when bone resorption is most rapid. A reline is a much more economical option than replacing your dentures entirely.
